July 19, 2005 (Press Release) --
”When a workplace injury ended his ability to do physical labour, Art felt as though he had been handed a death sentence. He could not read or write. What job could he do? After nine months of literacy learning, Art's future looks brighter. His new goal is to help spread the word in the greater community that there is hope and a future in learning to read and write.” – Canada Post Literacy Awards on Art Boudreau– Finalist, Individual Achievement – English
Not only is Art a finalist in this national competition, he’s also a first-time published author. His new book, Elephant Mountain (Trafford Publishing, June 2005) is the story of a young Irishman who came to British Columbia, Canada in the 1890s. Paddy aimed to get rich looking for gold. He made friends with people who shared his dream – an Irish blacksmith called O'Donald, a young woman called Lizzie, a prospector called Old Jim, and many others. Paddy the mule was his constant companion, keeping him from harm while he searched for gold and dreamed of reaching the top of Elephant Mountain and the gold he might find there.
“We’re proud to enthusiastically support Art’s nomination,” says his publisher’s CEO, Bruce Batchelor. “You would have to have seen the smile on Art’s face at his book launch party in June, to really appreciate how significant this is to him. The Victoria READ Society hosted the affair which was one of the most moving and motivational book events I’ve attended.”
The Victoria READ Society is a non-profit organization which helps students of all ages in the Greater Victoria area learn basic academic skills through small classes, individualized help and a supportive, caring environment.
