Mystery Serial Runs A Year and More
Devon Ellington’s mystery serial, Tapestry, reaches and passes its 104th issue in July at www.keepitcoming.net. A dark and comic tale set in New York City’s East Village of the 1990’s, Tapestry follows the exploits of recent NYU grad and aspiring artist Nina Bell as she sorts through love, life, and murder, post-college.
One novel-length story arc, focusing on the murder of her boss at a temp job and an attempted mugging by her boyfriend to relieve her of the $10,000 cash in her pocket, completed inside the serial structure several months ago. Several shorter arcs, approximately 7-10 episodes apiece, make up the current section (in episode 104 she finds a murdered patroness of the arts lying in the ladies’ room after a big fundraising event; the victim has a pair of nail scissors sticking out of her chest), before another novel-length arc begins.
“Since it’s a serial, a story without end, you can’t leave everything dangling interminably,” Ellington laughs. “Occasionally something has to be resolved or you’ll exhaust the readers. You want to keep them engaged, involved, and coming back for more. And then you have to deliver it.”
Ellington knows of what she speaks. She is also the author of the popular western The Widow’s Chamber and the action/adventure pirate serial Cutthroat Charlotte, both of which run on Keep it Coming. In addition, she is a regular contributor on thoroughbred racing and ice hockey for www.femmefan.com, along with publishing under a half a dozen names in both fiction and non-fiction. Her blog on the ups and downs of the writing life, Ink in My Coffee (http://inkinmycoffee.blogspot.com) has an enormous and ever-growing readership. Her new venture, The Thirteen Traveling Journals Project (http://13travelingjournalsproject.blogspot.com) has just launched, and is a multi-year, international project of traveling creativity.
