August 11, 2005 (Press Release) --
It's quite clear that you do not have to be an expert to "verify" history. Since the discovery of a ca1886 photograph of the Great Artist, more and more people are agreeing with the fact that Vincent indeed painted his self portraits using a photograph as his subject. It has been one year since the exhibit at the Seton Gallery, University of New Haven "Van Gogh, A Forensic Study", Henry Lee Institute Of Forensic Science, and I've heard from some prominent figures involved with Vincent and his history. Everyone, so far, has agreed that the 4 1/2" X 6 1/2" photograph must be him. When compared to his famous 1887 drawing, the similarities are too remarkable, even to the point where almost every whisker on his face can be compared and accounted for.
What surprised me the most was the number of people who contacted me to share their opinion.
The photo has been since published and can be seen in "Van Gogh: Original oder Falschung?". by Benoit Landais and "The Van Gogh File", "The Myth and the Man" by Ken Wilkie.
"There is still a little more work to be completed before our findings are further published" and, says artist Joseph Buberger, "I will present my findings to the Vincent Van Gogh Foundation". Owned by artist Tom Stanford, this photograph might be one of the most important photographic discoveries relating to the history of Art & photography!
