August 13, 2005 (Press Release) --
The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) strongly condemns the violent arbitrary detention and beatings of its Chairperson and other members of the party by President Gayoom's security services on August 12th and 13th 2005.
MDP Chairperson Mohamed Nasheed (Anni) and four MDP supporters were detained at 4pm on Friday 12th August, as they sat peacefully in the middle of Republican Square in Male'. They were conducting a quiet vigil of remembrance for the democracy rally that was brutally broken up by police on the same spot one year ago.
Nasheed and the others (Ahmed Abbas, Latheefa Umar, Jenny Latheef, Ahmed Mohamed) were surrounded by riot police and forcibly removed from the area. They were then taken to the infamous Dhoonidhoo Detention Centre.
Speaking from Dhoonidhoo Detention Centre on Friday evening, one eyewitness said Mohamed Nasheed had been "badly beaten" by police after being detained.
There were further reports of beatings and detentions by riot-clad police around the capital on Friday night and early Saturday morning, targeting innocent MDP supporters. MDP supporter Ali Riyaz is known to have been taken to hospital with serious back injuries. The arrest of opposition members also sparked protests in the southern Atolls of Gaaf Dhaal and Addu yesterday evening.
The Maldivian Democratic Party strongly condemns the brutal use of excessive force by the regime of President Gayoom and his Police Commissioner Adam Zahir.
The MDP filed a lawsuit against Police Commissioner Adam Zahir on Thursday 11th August for his role in leading previous acts of police brutality. The MDP believes the excesses of the police on Friday and Saturday are in part an act of revenge on the part of the Police Commissioner. The MDP further believes this crack-down was a pre-meditated operation with the police preparing for it days in advance.
The MDP believes that this kind of behaviour is not a sign of strength but a sign of a government totally lacking in any kind of legitimacy. It is a further example of Gayoom's continued reliance on brute force to maintain his 27-year rule and suppress the democratic aspirations of the Maldivian people.
