A brief reminder about a wonderful advertising opportunity for all who are, or provide services, products, & opportunities to, creative Black women.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) August 21, 2005 --
Philadelphia's 3rd Annual Black Women's Arts Festival (BWAF Philly 2005) will return to the University of Pennsylvania venue The Rotunda (4014 Walnut Street) this November 4th through 6th.
Founded in 2003 by musician and writer Cassendre
Xavier, the event showcases the multi-media
performances and visual art works by black women.
A self described "renaissance negresse", Xavier
founded the event to meet a need for venues that
feature and promote black female filmmakers, dancers, playwrights, painters, bandleaders and the like.
BWAF Philly changes every year. In the past,
wonderful films and videos created by black women from as near as North Philadelphia to as far as Egypt have been screened. Performances ranged from the folk music of Narissa Bond (daughter of civil rights activist Julian Bond) and the Grace Slick-meets-Jimmi Hendrix rocking tunes of electric guitar-playing flowerchild Ghetto Songbird. Nemiss has provided hip hop; Shelley
Nicole has provided funk/rock. Monica McIntyre, who is quickly moving up the music chain as a singing and cello-slappin' force to be reckoned with, has performed at both, and was the event coordinator for 2004's event.
Visual artists Cassandra Jefferson, Karen Grant, and Queenie have exhibited and sold their paintings and drawings. In addition, there has been dance, spoken word, an all-female open mic, and vendors. O a.k.a. Loretta Lynn Payne has closed the event with a healing ritual with men and women of all ages and colors, and the occasional toddler, sharing warm and enriching
moments together.
New this year will be the Black Women's Arts Festival Community Resource Guide. This publication will be launched at, on the first day of the Festival, and will feature graphic display and classified advertisements from organizations, companies, and individuals who provide products and/or services to
black women artists.
In addition to information about art galleries, art supply stores, bookstores, performance venues,
holistic health & beauty salons and stores, the BWAF
Community Resource guide will supply information about
grants for artists & writers.
In addition to a growing pool of volunteers, Xavier
is organizing the event with other black women artists
in the area. The publication and advertising of the
Community Resource Guide is being almost completely
handled by marketing & advertising consultant Chris
Lesnewski.
The list of corporate sponsors and
performance/exhibition schedule for BWAF Philly 2005
will be announced in mid-to late September.
Though the program began as a performance venue,
Xavier hopes to grow it into a venue to allow all involved to combine art-making and commerce. It is also a goal for the Black Women's Arts Festival to fund, and do activism in the interest of promoting arts classes in public schools.
The Black Women's Arts Festival publishes a
free weekly email newsletter that offers free event listings and free advertisements to its group list members and to the community at large.
