August 23, 2005 (Press Release) --
Central to the issue is last week’s denigration of Limerick by TV personality Graham Norton who in turn was at the butt end of Wogan’ caustic wit when he dismissed his barbs against the Treaty City.
Referring specifically to the significant contribution made to broadcasting and the arts by such Limerick celebrities as Richard Harris, Ciaran Mac Mathuna, David Hanly, Vincent Browne, Bill Whelan, Dolores O’Riordan, Frank McCourt and Mike Finn, Mayor Scully said that while they have put Limerick firmly on the map, "Terry Wogan holds a special place in the hearts of all Limerick people and we are very proud of him - he is one of Limerick’s favourite sons.”
"His wonderful wit and gentlemanly charm have entertained millions over the years and We’re delighted to claim him as one of our own.”
