September 2, 2005 (Press Release) --
With gas prices topping $3 on most parts of the East Coast and $5 in Atlanta, Georgia, people are beginning to feel the pinch in their wallets. Hurricane Katrina has shut down refineries, damaged fuel lines and devastated the Gulf Coast causing widespread physical and financial damage. Back in May I was complaining about paying $2/gallon for premium fuel, now I think it’s a great bargain when compared to the $3.69/gallon I paid today – 3 days after the hurricane. There’s not much I can do to reduce my driving habits. I have to get to work to pay the bills. The bus doesn’t drop me off anywhere close to my office and there is no train system where I live. So I came up with another way to help fight the cost of rising gas prices.
It’s not striking against the major gas companies like Exxon-Mobil and Shell. That actually hurts the owners of those gas stations more than it hurts the conglomerates if anything. My solution is actually quite simple – use a gas credit card when I fill up. If I use it at the gas credit card’s station, I can save up to10%/gallon for at least the first 60 days. That’s 37 cents a gallon less I could have paid today at the pump if I used a HESS® Visa® Platinum Card from Chase, Marathon® Platinum Mastercard from Chase, or a Speedway SuperAmerica Platinum MasterCard®. My car holds a little over 14 gallons so on one tank of gas I could have saved almost $6 using a gas credit card. There are other cards, like the Perfect Card, that offer a smaller rebate of 3% for the life of the gas card as well as 1% off other purchases like groceries.
Another type of credit card you could use is a cash back credit card. Some cash back credit cards offer up to 5% cash back on your purchases, which is a nice chunk of change to keep in your pocket. Think of it as your discount voucher or membership card at Sam’s Club with no annual fee. I would suggest Blue Cash from American Express, since it has a nice 0% intro Apr for six months. Of course not everyone would qualify for that card so a more likely candidate would be the Chase Cash Plus® Rewards Visa, which is my overall top pick (Save the best for last!). Not only do you get 5% off of gas for the life of the card, but you also get 5% cash back at grocery stores and drug stores, plus 1% cash back for every other purchase you make. There is no annual fee for the cash back card and you get a 0% intro Apr on purchases and balance transfers for the 12 months!
So if you’re looking to save a significant chunk of change in this time of high gas prices don’t overlook getting a gas credit card or a cash back credit card. You’ll be surprised at how much money you can really save!
