September 8, 2005 (Press Release) --
In Birmingham, Alabama a number of agencies have been consolidated under one roof for a “One Stop Shop” approach to delivery of services for hurricane Katrina evacuees.
Recognizing that evacuees had suffered enough city officials sought to provide relief during the logistical phase of accessing information and assistance.
The Boutwell Auditorium at 1930 8th Avenue North in downtown Birmingham is now a centralized location with access to assistance regarding FEMA, Red Cross, Medicaid, housing, employment, utilities, Social Security, Veteran’s Affairs and mental health.
Birmingham City Council Lee Loder says “I am in awe at how quickly the public and private sectors came together to offer much needed services to hurricane victims. A number of people left satisfied that many of their immediate needs had been taken care of. The spirit of the volunteers and their work ethic allowed the process to move forward in spite of the immense volume of service seekers and the enormity of needs.”
For an interview with Council President Loder, contact City Council Senior Public Information Officer Karin Hopkins at 205.254.2036, 205.335.4014 (cell) or karin.hopkins@ci.birmingham.al.us.
