September 26, 2005 (Press Release) --
Southern Africa comprises the countries of The Republic of South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Mozambique as well as the Kingdom’s of Swaziland and Lesotho.
Each climactic season has its advantages, and each area has its best times to be there.
To start, the seasons in the Southern Hemisphere are the opposite of those in the Northern Hemisphere. During the United States of America summer months, southern Africa is in its winter months and vice versa.
THE REPUBLIC OF SOUTH AFRICA
The Republic of South Africa lies at the southern most sweep of the subcontinent. In size, the country is approximately 472,000 square miles and boasts a population of 43.6 million. Located just south of the Tropic of Capricorn, the topography and surrounding oceans influence its climate, rather than the latitude. Whilst the climate varies from region to region, it is generally mild and sunny year round and is typically a dry country with a mean average annual rainfall of approximately 20 inches. Snowfall is very limited to only the highest mountain peaks. Summer temperatures average between 60ºF - 96ºF at midday. The province of KwaZulu/Natal enjoys a sub- tropical climate bringing with it high humidity during the summer months. The southern region of the Gauteng province enjoys long hot summers with occasional thundershowers and frosty winters, while the eastern part of the Mpumalanga province (also known as the Lowveld) enjoys mild winters. The Cape interior and the Free State have similar weather conditions as those experienced in the southern Gauteng region whilst the Western Cape region has a Mediterranean climate with warm, dry summers and cold, wet winters.
SUMMER: September – April
WINTER: May – August
The northern regions of the country are excellent destinations to visit during the winter months as game viewing is at its prime due to the low foliage. There is very little winter rainfall in the north and the temperatures are generally mild ranging between 68ºF - 73ºF at midday.
The southern regions of the country are definitely summer destinations with a low summer rainfall and temperatures reaching between 80ºF - 88ºF or higher on beautiful days.
The best time to head to southern Africa for a game safari is during their winter months of June-August. At that time [the dry season], the tall grass veldt has diminished substantially making it a perfect time for game viewing.
At the same time however, it is of importance that you note that the Western Cape region (INCLUDING CAPE TOWN) experiences a Mediterranean climate and is subject to rainy conditions during these months.
The best months to visit to the city of Cape Town would be the months of November – March.
Namaqualand, located in the Western and Northern Cape Provinces evolves into a floral masterpiece in the spring (mid-August to mid-September), as the desert-like terrain is transformed into a carpet of flowers and draws thousands of visitors whilst the warm waters of the east coast make for almost year-round bathing.
Winters are mild with the exception of the higher elevated regions of the country.
