September 30, 2005 (Press Release) --
Dental decay is the most prevalent health problem in the Australian community and the second most costly diet-related disease in Australia.
Communities with high fermentable carbohydrate consumption like starch and sugar have a high caries rate.
Almost all cavities occur between teeth and inside grooves where the brush, toothpaste, mouthwash, saliva and chewing gum cannot reach to remove food that is trapped every time we eat. Much of the food we eat is cariogenic like sugar and starch especially in confection and fast food but we do not have a tooth care habit that removes food after eating.
Oral health promotion must be a part of any community or school health promoting project and a Melbourne dentist has Developed the online Supertooth Plaque Watch Project for schools and home to help develop all tooth care skills.
The dentis has found some foods like cheese can block grooves before eating to prevent food being trapped and changed to acid while eating.
He also found that chewing certain foods like celery after eating, develop a ball of fibre that remains chewy for a long time scouring food and plaque from tooth surfaces while forcing saliva around teeth and inside grooves on chewing surfaces to neutralise acid and repair demineralised tooth.
However such foods have a short shelf life and are not easy to carry on ones person or convenient to chew after eating every meal or snack and have limited effect between teeth and at gum margins.
Dental research company YNDK Pty Ltd is developing products with a long shelf life that will be easy to purchase at supermarkets, pharmacies, confectioners and fast food outlets and to carry around to conveniently protect teeth before and after eating.
These items will also function as teaching aids to help develop tooth care skills in the online Supertooth Plaque Watch school/home project, http://supertooth.ndk.biz
The Supertooth Project shows plaque at gum margins and between teeth with food dye, and helps develop skills and compares different methods of removing plaque. Also simple experiments to simulate chewing and how to sealing grooves
Also the Supertooth and Good Food Friends 5 Star Approval for foods like sugarless confection, cheese and celery and Tooth Friendly Products like toothbrushes, floss, gum, etc.
