October 7, 2005 (Press Release) --
A new variant of the Sober mass mailing worm has been found in the wild.
The new worm uses its own SMTP engine to send out emails. The worm
collects the email addresses from the infected computer and then sends
itself as an attachment to these email addresses.
The email that is sent out is in both in English or in German. It sends
out an email in German when finds that the domain of the email address
is either
de (Germany),
ch (Switzerland),
at (Austria) or
li (Liechtenstein).
The new worm has no destructive effects and only displays a fake error
message when it is run.
