new international debate program creates involvement,research, and knowledge

Michael Cunningham, Del Valle High School, Del Valle Texas, was looking for a creative way to create more interest in debate when he created an International Debate format that increases involvement, research, and point of view for his students.

Cunningham," I was looking for something different. Something that would allow us to bring the world into our classroom yet something we could do within the confines of the classroom. Currently most high schools have classes which run about 50 minutes. This doesn't really allow you the opportunity to do CX debate which takes about ninety minutes to complete. This means that it takes two days to complete a debate in class. What are you to do with other students? This is a problem so we tried other debate formats like Public Forum and Lincoln Douglas. No matter what format we were not satisfied. That is when I came up with International Foreign Policy Debate. This way we can look at three points of view at once. It makes our students much more aware and they begin to look at more than the typical one or two points of view."

The International Foreign Policy Debate, a student can see that in any given situation there is more than one point of view, more than two points of view, and you can find out that truth is out there- all you have to do is to find it!
