Sheril Susan Moore, age 59, was evacuating Hurricane Rita, traveling from her home in Houston on the way to her sons home in Golden, Colorado on September 23, 2005.
The Moore family had contacted Texas Equusearch in September after her disappearance, as well as the Oklahoma City Police Department. Texas Equusearch coordinated several flyovers of the route she was supposed to be traveling from Oklahoma City to Kansas City were completed by an Equusearch volunteer pilot.
Her vehicle was located by a farmer on Thursday, October 20, 2005 in his field near Amber, Oklahoma in Grady County. The farmer called authorities about 4p.m. Thursday to report that the 2001 Ford Explorer driven by Sheril Susan Moore was about 300 yards from the road sitting along a creek bed.
Friday October 21, a search was mounted by local deputies, state troopers and Amber police, searching the area on foot and from the air in an attempt to locate Ms. Moore.
The Texas Equusearch team arrived in Amber, Oklahoma Monday night October 26, and a search was organized overnight and commenced at 9a.m. Tuesday morning. Texas Equusearch Assistant Search Director Wade White and his volunteer team discovered a body at 10:15a.m., believed to be that of Ms. Moore. The body was located one-quarter mile from her vehicle in tall grass.
The Grady County Medical Examiners Office is working to positively identify the body as of Wednesday, October 26, 2005.
