November 14, 2005 (Press Release) --
Promising to combine a magical winter wonderland with a disco on ice, the event, which runs from December 10, will have something for all ages.
Organiser Fran O’Donnell said that 35,000 people used the ice rink at Limerick’s Potato Market last Christmas. And he expects an even bigger crowd this year.
“We had letters from local schools asking us when the ice rink will be returning because they found tickets for Limerick's Holiday on Ice an excellent prize for their classes,” said Mr O’Donnell.
But it is not just children who take to the ice, Mr O'Donnell remembered two ladies in their 70s who came to the rink last year.
“They told me they had skated in England in their youth and had waited years for Limerick to have its own ice rink,” he said.
And the two women got reacquainted with their skating again after one session thanks to the help of the professional skate marshals employed at the ice rink.
Over 70 jobs have been created this year, with a team of skate marshals and attendants being hired for this year.
And owing to the success in Limerick, Mr O’Donnell’s company Futureama is taking Holiday on Ice to Killarney and Clifden.
“We are responding to local demand by opening these two new centres and it will make us the biggest ice rink holiday company in the country,” Mr O'Donnell said.
Limerick’s Holiday on Ice will run from December 10 to January 8. Tickets are €10 per child; €15 per adult, and €45 per family per hour skating.http://www.limerick.com
