The 2006 Ford Fusion is built on the immensely popular Mazda 6 platform, but with more refinements. Ford designers stretched the wheel base by 2.1 inches and length by 3.4 inches. Plus, Ford raised structural stiffness by 10 percent, making for a rock-stable sedan which refuses to pitch and roll on challenging rides. The interior is so refined that it is “reminiscent of Audis”.
Under the hood, Ford offers two power-train options – a 2.3 L, 160 hp four- cylinder paired to a standard 5-speed manual or an available 5-speed automatic, and a class-exclusive combination of a 3.0L, 221 hp Duratec V6 and a 6-speed Automatic. The four-cylinder Fusion delivers an EPA estimated mileage of 23 city/31 highway mpg, and the V6 Fusion offers 21 city/29 highway mpg.
For 2006, the Ford Fusion is available in five trims. The Fusion I4 S, Fusion I4 SE and Fusion I4 SEL come with the four-cylinder power-train, and the Fusion V6 SE and the Fusion V6 SEL offer the potent Duratec V6 engine.
