FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Trenton, NJ (11/18/05)- As open source software continues to gain in market share, Rokland LLC announced today the latest release of its popular office package, Rokland Office Suite. The new release, version 3.0 (also referred to as ROS 3), continues the Rokland quest to bring popular open source software into the homes of folks who may not have broadband connections.
Just like its predecessor, ROS 3 brings together on one CD-ROM open source programs like OpenOffice.org, a full-featured office software suite with word processor and spreadsheet (both which are dually compatible with their Microsoft Office counterparts), Mozilla Thunderbird and Firefox, a powerful email client and alternative web browser respectively, and ClamWin, an antivirus software package to protect your PC from viruses and worms.
ROS 3 includes the most recent releases of these titles; version 2.0 of OpenOffice.org, version 1.0.7 of Mozilla Thunderbird and Firefox, and version 0.87.1 of ClamWin.
"Programs like Microsoft Office or Norton Antivirus have an advantage in the market because they are released on CD-ROM so everyone can get them," said Rokland spokesman Jason Opdyke. "What we have been doing with the ROS package is putting some great open source titles that are only available for download onto CD-ROMs so that people who don't have broadband connections can still get the programs."
The size of the programs on the ROS 3 CD totals over 200 megabytes which would literally take days for someone with a dial-up connection to download. With the exception of Mozilla, few open source developers release CD-ROM distributions of their programs. OpenOffice.org, for example, is only available for download at the OpenOffice.org web site. The developers of OpenOffice.org do not directly distribute a CD-ROM, the only way to get the software on CD is through a Community Distributor like Rokland.
Rokland Office Suite is available at http://www.rokland.com for $6.99. Opdyke made it a point to add "we do not charge a shipping fee on the CD-ROM and the $6.99 fee is not a charge for the software itself- it allows us to cover our costs and labor of making and mailing the CD to customers. We also donate funds to the makers of the software. It is always a great pleasure to send a PayPal contribution to the folks at OpenOffice.org or one of the other software development groups."
