November 28, 2005 (Press Release) --
Ann Arbor, Mi. 11/14/05 - Two-year old beer merchandise company SudsGear.com demonstrates how thousands of small businesses are harnessing the power of the internet to help local brands from around the world receive global exposure and sales. With a rapidly expanding selection of shirts, hats, glassware and other merchandise from 75 breweries and 15 countries, SudsGear.com has emerged as a leader in the once-sleepy, now thriving market for beer merchandise. The internet-based company is transforming the market for beer items that once were sold only in markets, airports and brewery gift-shops, but which are now available online to customers worldwide.
Beer merchandise has become big business in recent years with large retailers such as WalMart, Target, J.C. Penney, Urban Outfitters and others now offering beer branded merchandise. However, these companies, and the licensees that supply them, typically only offer brands from large U.S. and European breweries such as Anheuser-Busch, SABMiller and Guinness. Meanwhile, smaller breweries and their importers struggle to cost-effectively market their brands to a larger audience. SudsGear.com has stepped in to fill this void.
SudsGear.com, under parent company Geographic Beverage Marketing, Inc., was founded in early 2004 on the premise that small beer companies from around the world offered exciting brands, but had no consistent channel to distribute their branded merchandise. SudsGear.com’s founding partners, Stephen McClatchey, David Schwager and Joe Siedel constantly scour the globe for new brands to add to the site. The company currently offers merchandise from countries as diverse as Israel, Tahiti, and Laos. Earlier this year they added merchandise from Egyptian brewer Stella Beer to the website and sold out within days, including two shirts sold to the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad, Iraq, demonstrating the pent-up demand for unique global apparel. Other bestsellers include shirts from U.S.-based microbreweries such as Capitol City Brewing in Washington D.C. and Yards Brewing in Philadelphia, neither of which offered any merchandise online prior to partnering with SudsGear.com.
SudsGear offers increased exposure for these small brands, many of whom have no U.S. affiliation. For example, representatives from a 5-Star hotel in New York City recently contacted SudsGear to figure out how to purchase Australia’s Victoria Bitter (VB) beer for a special event. SudsGear.com was the only representative of VB that the hotel could find in the U.S. As a result of the emerging crop of internet-based companies like SudsGear, local brands like VB are quickly gaining a global presence.
