November 30, 2005 (Press Release) --
Dogs Across America is a dog powered relay that will take place December 2, 3, and 4, 2005. Of the 30 participating states, Washington, Michigan, California, Florida and Texas have the most participants to date. You can see http://www.dogsacrossamerica.org for updated information about which states are participating and a map of the USA showing where the participants are. The participants consist of dog lovers who have trained their pooches to run ahead of them in harness while pulling scooters they ride, and other dog powered sports enthusiasts. The goal of the event is to raise positive publicity for dog powered sports, including dog scootering, across the country, and to bring these sports to areas that may not be aware of them.
Some members of the group are mushers with kennels of sled dogs. Some are pet owners with just one or several dogs. The group varies in age from teenagers to grandparents in their 60’s. Mushers will drive their rigs/carts and multiple dogs. Scooterers will ride their scooters or their mountain bikes. Other dog drivers may participate with their dogs pulling roller blades or skateboards. Some may participate by Canicross, where the dog is harnessed to a belt and the person runs behind the dog.
Dogs Across America is for fun and adventure and to call attention to the sport of dog scootering. Dog scootering is mushing for the rest of us. It is very big in Europe, where they hold Dog Scooter races much like the dogsled races here in the USA. Dog Scootering is just starting to catch on here in the states though, but it is a great way to get exercise for both yourself and your dogs.
