Independent Film about single parenting touches on a universal theme

(AKRON, OH) – When writer and director, Eric Stuyvesant, first penned his script, “Custody”, he wasn’t thinking business. He never considered who his target audience would be. “It was little more than a therapeutic release,” admits Stuyvesant. “I just needed to chronicle my situation, and screenwriting was the only way I knew. I never realized how many people felt trapped by their circumstances.”
“Custody”, now available on DVD, is a quasi-autobiographical roller coaster ride that takes the audience through the emotional highs and lows of life as a single-father. Steering clear of the traditional “Hollywood Formula”, Stuyvesant offers up gut-wrenching drama combined with wry humor that has a very simple, but bold slice-of-life feel. While the focus of the film deals with the emotional trials and tribulations of single parenting it also touches on a set of very universal emotions. “I don’t care who you are,” says Stuyvesant, “at one point or another you’ve felt trapped by life. Maybe it was a bad marriage, an addiction, or a dead-end job, but everyone, at some point or another, has felt the weight of the world bearing down on them and, if even for the briefest of moments, had no place to turn.” It is this universal theme that Stuyvesant and Howard Lipp of Centerline Entertainment are banking on. “It’s a simple movie. There are no state-of-the-art camera angles, or flashy CGI. It’s story telling at its finest, and something that everyone can relate to. For us it’s “Swingers” ten years later.”
Similar to “Swingers”, the making of “Custody” took on a very guerilla style method of filmmaking. “We had very little money,” says Scott Wachtel, Stuyvesant’s award winning co-director, “but we had a do-or-die attitude that resulted with a very favorable product. We were fortunate to be graced with people like Mary Faktor (American Splendor) who lent her talent on a deferred payment basis.” “Custody” also introduces newcomer Marisa Tomasic. “Every once in awhile someone enters the room and the world stops. Marisa was that person”, muses Lipp. The small budget also forced Stuyvesant to make his acting debut. “I look a lot like Ed Harris, people are always asking me for his autograph, so I figured I’d capitalize on that”
