December 10, 2005 (Press Release) --
Online sportsbook and casino, BET by INTERNET, announced that EBAY has decided to halt its $100,000 auction for a pre-paid membership to be used for online gambling. The auction which ran almost a full two days had seen its fair share of traffic from EBAY potential buyers. BETByINTERNET announced on popular sports betting forum that the reserve price was set at nearly 50% less the face value of $100,000, or somewhere around $49,000. "I am surpised it took nearly two full days for the EBAY legal team to catch and react to the auction and finally make the decision to stop the auction siting 'encouraging illegal actions' in an email addressed to our promotions department", said Lee Samuels, Director of Promotions. "Our guess is that the legal department was at a prolonged holiday party and slept the first few days of the auction", he added.
BETbyINTERNET plans to list a similar auction, but this time will make the catch of the promotion a pre-paid gambling trip to Las Vegas.
"Gambling is only legal in Vegas, we guess?", said Randal Zuniga, Vice-president of operations. "So my guess is that EBAY should not have a problem with this type of auction", Zuniga concluded.
