KNIGHT BACHELOR
Dr Allen James McCLAY CBE - Chair, ALMAC and Chair, The Queen’s University of Belfast Foundation. For services to Business and to Charity in Northern Ireland. (Cookstown Co. Tyrone)
He worked for Glaxo until 1968 when he founded Galen, Northern Ireland’s first pharmaceutical company. He retired from Galen in 2001 and acquired those divisions of the company that had been engaged in pharmaceutical services activities. He also acquired a local bio-analytical services company that recruits high quality research doctorates internationally. He funds university research and teaching in Northern Ireland. In 1997 he established the McClay Trust to advance teaching and research in the Schools of Chemistry, Pharmacy and Medicine at Queen’s University. The work carried out at Queen’s contribute to the pharmaceutical and healthcare industries, including cancer research, both locally and internationally and has played a significant role in strengthening Northern Ireland’s research and development base. He is Chairman of the Board of the Queen’s University of Belfast Foundation, which has launched a £150 million campaign for Queen’s.
