Nepal’s first-ever half marathon on November 12, 2006, to benefit the Himalayan Cataract Project (www.cureblindness.org).
For_Immediate_Release:

January 2, 2006 (Press Release) -- Boulder-based Explore Adventure Sports will host Nepal’s first-ever half marathon on November 12, 2006, to benefit the Himalayan Cataract Project (www.cureblindness.org). The run will fall on the ninth day of a 14-day adventure — The Nepal Trek and Trail Run — a journey through some of the most magnificent terrain on this planet.

“This is something I’ve dreamed of putting together for years,” explains Explore Adventure Sports founder John Oliva. “With the strong contacts and friends we’ve made during our more than 20 trips to Nepal, we are finally able to offer this package to travelers -- while helping the remarkable Himalayan Cataract Project.”

The Nepal Trek and Trail Run – www.nepaltrekandtrail.com -- is designed for everyone. The adventure begins with a sightseeing tour of Kathmandu (including a tour of the Tilanganga Eye Center), then a flight to Pokhara to begin the trek. The journey weaves through the lower-altitude Annapurna region of Nepal and has minimal altitude gain. Guides will lead trekkers through lush bamboo forests and rice fields, across many waterfalls and to stunning views of the Himalayas.

The half marathon, to be held on day nine of the trek, is mostly downhill — from an elevation of 9000 ft. to 6400 ft. -- through Rhododendron forests and mind-boggling valleys that reach as far as India’s border. Friends and family can trek ahead and meet runners at the finish line.

A portion of the proceeds from the Nepal Trek and Trail Run will benefit the Himalayan Cataract Project. This organization strives to eradicate preventable and curable blindness in the Himalayan region through high-quality ophthalmic care, education, and establishment of a sustainable eye care infrastructure. The Nepal Trek & Trail Run hopes to raise enough funds to sponsor an eye clinic that will treat 1000 patients and perform 250 surgeries.

Explore Adventure Sports was founded in 1996 by adventurer and race director John Oliva to promote environmental adventure travel and manage premier races throughout the world. The company has a reputation for offering unique world-class adventures to off-the-beaten-path areas. Journeys have a unique cultural emphasis and clients learn the true nature of the region that most other travelers pass by.
