January 5, 2006 (Press Release) --
Limits of the conventional approach of search engines
Internet users who only look for information on the web with Google or Yahoo Search are missing out on a vast part of the web hidden beneath the surface: it is 500 times larger that the web above the surface and contains all the online information that is not indexed by these search engines.
Indeed, the search engines' robots or spiders, which crawl from link to link indexing webpages as they go, are stopped in their tracks by search forms sometimes needed to access dynamic sites, or other online databases. Pages on such databases are by definition generated as and when required, in response to specific queries entered in the search form on that particular site, and they are therefore not directly accessible via an address reached by crawling.
The wealth of the Invisible Web
The Invisible Web on the other hand, also called the "Deep Web", abounds with ever-increasing amounts of extremely useful resources, whose quality has been rated as 3 times higher than that of the Visible Web … and which are very often accessible for free. A gold mine of great value to many professionals in their research and information intelligence activities.
In the Health sector for example there are 15 million articles in the PubMed database of the National Library of Medicine, thousands of research notices in the Public Health Data Bank (French National Health Authority), 80,000 clinical trials listed in Current Controlled Trials, 45,000 drugs on the French market listed in Theriaque,…and these are just a fraction of the thousands of other sources available (see the illustration of health sources on the Invisible Web).
Digimind's White Paper: "Discover and exploit the Invisible Web for competitive intelligence"
Christophe Asselin, author of the White Paper and acknowledged expert in the field (see inset), presents Digimind's methodology and around forty essential resources for identifying the hidden treasures on the Invisible Web - which can then be monitored by Digimind Evolution, the publisher's Competitive Intelligence platform.
