A new book, x + y = Dinner?, teaches cooking, step-by-step. It is the first book of its kind, systematically equipping home cooks to adapt, improvise, and cook without a recipe.

Unlike any other cookbook on the market, x + y = Dinner?: Taking the Mystery Out of the Cooking Equation teaches people how to cook, step-by-step. Thousands of cookbooks provide cooks with recipes but, until now, none has equipped them to adapt, improvise, or leave the cookbooks entirely behind.
x + y = Dinner? addresses normal home cooks, not gourmet chefs. The author is familiar with busy lives and understands the desire to prepare healthy meals within a limited budget, and with a minimum of effort. The processes and recipes involved are practical and well-suited to the average American home.
x + y = Dinner? opens with a chapter about food and nutrition. This provides the foundation for healthy meal planning. The following three chapters address equipment, ingredients, and cooking methods, providing the
most elementary foundation for cooking. Twenty-three chapters about specific food categories follow, giving step-by-step instruction and information about ingredients and methods. Carefully selected recipes accompany each new technique, enabling the reader to practice. Recipes are also broken down and given as basic formulas. These formulas simplify the cooking process and make it seem far less overwhelming.
Chapters covering menu planning, grocery shopping, freezer cooking, an overview of food preservation, and creating homemade convenience mixes wrap up the main portion of the text. Appendices address substitutions, seasonings, and table settings, as well as other homemaking tasks - cleaning, laundry, and household management. Chapter questions and assignments are provided to make the text self-teaching and/or make lesson planning easy for homeschooling parents.
