Young Authors Present Books to Governor Riley

(Free-Press-Release.com) January 13, 2006 -- Topeka, KS, January 13, 2006: Grade two students at Glenwood School in Phenix City, AL, will present copies of their book created in a classroom publishing project to Governor Bob Riley on January 24 at 10:00 a.m. at the State Capital Building in Montgomery, AL.

The ABC�s of Alabama books dedicated to the state of Alabama were created in Jeanne Bartley�s and Jennifer Camacho�s classroom. The project was initiated to help build reading and writing skills and to generate excitement among young authors.

�Our students really enjoyed this project. It�s great that it�s a real book,� said Camacho. �They did take it seriously knowing that they were going to be real authors. The project also helped develop research and computer skills. We�re definitely doing this again next year.�

The books were published through Studentreasures, a division of Nationwide Learning, Inc. located in Topeka, Kansas. The one-of-a-kind writing enrichment project, designed to motivate students to learn through publishing, has been developed for educators to meet a variety of curricula standards; to build self-confidence, improve reading, writing, and artistic skills, and to generate excitement among students by creating an actual hardbound, professionally published book.

Camacho�s class recently received notification that their ABC�s of Alabama book has been named one of the 1,500 finalists in the annual Nationwide Learning National Book Challenge. Books, judged for originality, storyline, and illustration, are selected from elementary, middle, high schools, and colleges throughout the United States. Winners receive a $100 cash scholarship and will be announced during May 2006.
