January 25, 2006 (Press Release) --
The Black Market – It’s All About the Bootleg
The movie opens with Moses (Mike Atkins) and some of his “crew” gathering near a corner store where they are called in to look at a news broadcast about bootleg movies and CD’s that are being sold on the streets in large numbers. Moses, who is one of the top retailers of these products, listens to the broadcast but maintains that he is just a businessman trying to support his family.
Moses “crew” feels the same way he does and has been loyal to him and to his operation. The operation consists of going to New York and picking up the latest movies and CD’s, then bringing them back to New Jersey for distribution to the street vendors.
The money is good and things are working out fine until the authorities decide to do a sweep and confiscate all goods. Moses to no avail attempts to reason with the authorities but understands that situations like this are a part of the business he is in but Rickey (Raymond Spencer), who is one of Moses’ best vendors confronts the authorities and challenges their right to take the goods.
The confrontation leads to a dramatic outcome and Moses later realizes that even though they are just trying to support their families, this “Black Market” phenomenon has grown to point where they must now realize that they are all involved in a very serious game.
The confrontation also leads to the devastation of Mona (Kyaysha Clory) who is Rickey girlfriend and shows some of the ill effects that urban life can have on their youthful son Messiah (Michael Harris). Great performances throughout provide insight into the “bootleg” industry as this drama goes full circle!
