Recently InventionsResource launched its new website, featuring assistance for finding numerous resources and news pertaining to inventions via the internet.
Inventions have been the staple of development around the world. People come up with all kinds of ideas to make our lives easier and to better mankind. Most of the major inventions of last century came from individuals, not corporations.
Inventors are people like you and me who come from all walks of life. Some are scientists, engineers and technical professionals who work for large companies. Most, however, are everyday people like electricians, sales people, nurses, retailers, business people and even kids who look at a situation and come up with a solution that they think works better.
Once they come up with an idea, most people just let it go as just an idea. They go no further with it. Other people look for an opportunity to patent their ideas and hopefully make money from them.
Obtaining a patent is a costly and time consuming process, but well worth it if you have the patience and fortitude and if you have the undying belief that your invention is something that is useful to others in any way.
Patents are products of the legal system, apply only to inventions, and then only if the invention falls within legally defined categories. Anything outside these categories cannot be patented.
There are three legal classes of patentability:
• Utility Patents: These are inventions that apply to almost anything that can be made. These can be a new and useful process, device, machine, manufactured item, chemical compound or formula. They are granted for a period of 20 years, after which the patent to an invention becomes public property.
• Design Patent: These are for new, original or ornamental designs for a manufactured item. These patents are granted for 14 years and protect only the appearance of the item.
• Plant Patent: These are for an invented or discovered new plant variety that can be asexually reproduced. These are granted for a period of 20 years.
