February 5, 2006 (Press Release) --
Any participant who raises at least $1,000 and loses at least ten pounds or ten percent of his body weight by May 1st earns the coveted honor of becoming an “Incredible Loser.”
Losing weight? Why are we doing this? Well, we need to lose weight. More importantly, though, we are doing this to support a very good cause, Prader-Willi syndrome. Each person in the first annual lose-a-thon knows someone with the syndrome making this a very personal challenge. As of today, there are 36 of us working to lose those extra pounds before awareness week, April 29 to May 6th, 2006.
Prader-Willi syndrome is a randomly caused genetic disorder (due, essentially, to a missing slice of genetic material) that typically results in mild to moderate cognitive impairment, a variety of problem behaviors, and a chronic feeling of hunger which, absent close supervision, leads to excessive eating and life-threatening obesity. It is the leading genetic cause of obesity in children, and it affects 1 in every 12,000 to 15,000 live births (see www.pwsausa.org or call 800.926.4797 for more information on PWS). PWSA (USA) is the only national organization that is dedicated to improving the lives of all persons afflicted with PWS and supporting them at every stage of life. Through research, publications, crisis counseling, parent mentoring, educational conferences, a fantastic Web site and a host of other services, this relatively small organization works miracles daily.
We have often felt that if we could apply to ourselves even half the eating discipline imposed on a person with the syndrome, we would have no weight problem at all.
In any case, we are asking the world to consider helping us with this fundraising effort by sending a donation, payable to PWSA (USA). Checkes could be mailed to PWSA (USA), 5700 Midnight Pass Rd., Suite 6, Sarasota, FL 34242 with the name of the person losing weight to Prader-Willi Syndrome or in general for all those losing weight for Prader-Willi syndrome. You may also donate on our personal web pages online at http://www.pwsausa.org/fundraising/lose-a-thon. Credit card donations are also acceptable. Your entire donation is tax-deductible.
When the going gets rough, we try to remind ourselves that the hunger we feel is akin to what our loved one with PWS experience every minute of every day, regardless of how much they have eaten. If they can hang in there, so can we.

You have heard of marathons, walk-a-thons, dance-a-thons, but this is a Lose-A-Thon. We are setting our weight loss goals and hoping to raise money for Prader-Willi Syndrome Association (USA).
