Moncton loses a bundle on the Rolling Stones
Canadian Press
Moncton, N.B. - The city of Moncton lost $671,477 on a giant outdoor concert headlined by the Rolling Stones in September.
Ian Fowler, the city's general manager of recreation, parks, tourism and culture, said Monday that no one was more disappointed than him at being in the red.
“We knew we were taking a risk,” he said. “Would other Atlantic cities have taken the risk if they could have had the chance? You bet your bottom dollar they would.”
Much of the budget overruns came in one-time infrastructure investments to the Magnetic Hill concert site, such as plumbing, fencing, lighting and paving.
About 70,000 people attended the all-day concert that also featured The Tragically Hip and other acts.
Mr. Fowler said those expenditures will pay off if the city is successful in attracting more concerts to the venue.
He said the city went way over budget for policing, signing a contract with the RCMP for $266,570 instead of the planned $175,000.
He said the city believed it needed additional security based on some RCMP intelligence. He didn't elaborate, but there were suggestions last summer that hundreds of motorcycle gang members were coming to the city to attend the Sept. 3 concert.
As well, the cost of providing medical care at the concert site went over budget.
Mr. Fowler said the city has learned a great deal about how to do things better in the future.
