February 16, 2006 (Press Release) --
Williamsburg, VA, February 15, 2006: The newest student newspaper at The College of William and Mary, The Virginia Informer, has, this week, distributed copies of the paper which highlights the civil lawsuit of Patrick Decker v. Anne Harrington, as Decker, the student accused of rape by Harrington, is seeking punitive damages for the false charges.
The Informer obtained the official court documents and has posted them on their website, www.VAInformer.com. The new revelations name a law student, Jason Mustian, as the third person in the room when the alleged encounter between Harrington and Decker took place. Details of the case can be found in the February issues, which have been distributed all around campus and in the community as well. This is also the first time that a campus publication has printed the accuser’s name, as it is well within their legal right to do so.
It is also on The Informer’s website that one can subscribe to the Podcasts that will update periodically. Podcasts are recordings that can be uploaded to Apple’s iPods and taken on the road. The Virginia Informer is billing this as a means for students to listen to the news on the way to class if they do not have the time to read it in print or online.
The Virginia Informer is an upstart paper at the College, with 1500 copies distributed monthly. It has been recognized by many students as the superior paper when dealing with actual reporting, as opposed to the sensationalism of some and the sheer inaccuracy and sloppiness of others. “Just last night, a student commented to me that she was glad to see someone actually cared enough to fully investigate a story before printing it,” said Amanda Yasenchak, the Editor-in-Chief and co-founder.
The latest issue also includes the story of a pro-life student who was attacked at a pro-life vigil last Tuesday, as well as stories about the future of ROTC on campus, Facebook and the college disciplinary system, and features on the changes in campus housing for 2006-2007.
A scathing editorial railing against the solution to the sexual assault problem as proposed by College President Gene Nichol and Vice President of Student Affairs Sam Sadler is also in the February issue.
