February 19, 2006 (Press Release) --
In the spring of 1977, the Division of Continuing Education at Harvard University established the Institute for Learning in Retirement. In so doing, the University recognized the importance of cultivating the great store of accumulated knowledge among the community of older adults and of providing opportunities for continued educational growth.
Since that time, the active membership has grown from 100 to 500 members, and over the decades thousands of men and women have taken part in the Institute's study groups. The membership is drawn from a broad and diverse spectrum of the community and includes professionals from such fields as education, law, healthcare, the arts, business, and technology. All are distinguished by their keen interest in the world of ideas. The Institute serves as a model for similar academic programs nationally and internationally.
