March 2, 2006 (Press Release) --
The American Academy of Urgent Care Medicine (AAUCM), an Orlando-based national standards-and-training organization for physicians, has formed an alliance with Ohio State University to launch the nation's first residency training program for urgent-care medicine.
"It's a phenomenal milestone," says Dr. Franz Ritucci, president and director of the academy.
The academy will help fund the residency program at Ohio State. Initially, about $500,000 a year will be paid out of the academy's members’ dues to defray some of the training costs for as many as five physicians.
"This has been our goal from the outset," Ritucci said, and the academy has been building a "treasure chest" to help finance the program.
The academy has been performing some continuing education on its own for years. Recently it was successful in persuading the American Medical Association to recognize urgent-care medicine as a specialty in its own right.
A pediatrician who works in an urgent-care center, for example, may now train for and receive additional certification for urgent-care medicine, with a UCM code authorized by the American Medical Association.
"It's the new specialty of tomorrow," Ritucci said, with explosive growth in the field as physicians in centers meet growing demands for rapid treatment of a wide range of conditions, such as the flu or a cut foot, that need prompt attention but do not rise to the level of emergency-room care.
The American Academy of Urgent Care Medicine (AAUCM) is comprised of a collective group of physicians actively engaged in the field of urgent care medicine. With thousands of members, the Academy is becoming one of the most important medical associations in the United States.
The purpose of the American Academy of Urgent Care Medicine is to contribute to the field of urgent care medicine in the areas of professional growth, scientific and medical research, elevate the standards of medical care through education, basic and advance training and board certification.
The American Academy of Urgent Care Medicine (AAUCM) is the only urgent care medicine organization that is recognized by the AMA, the only urgent care organization that is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide its own Continuing Medical Education, the only organization that was successful in having Urgent Care Medicine, (UCM) established as a self-designated/practice specialty code by the AMA, and the only urgent care medicine organization represented in the Specialty and Service Society of the AMA (http://www.ama-assn.org/ama/pub/category/15378.html). In addition, the American Board of Urgent Care Medicine (ABUCM), the certifying body of the AAUCM, is the only organization in the U.S. functioning to certify properly qualified candidates in the specialty of urgent care medicine.
