Susanne Pacher, Publisher of Travel and Transitions, recently explored Barrie, a city just about an hour outside of Toronto. Barrie is a growing city of 125,000 located right on the shores of the Lake Simcoe, which is a major hub for ice-fishing. What makes Barrie a popular winter travel destination is its proximity to a number of winter resorts like Horseshoe Valley, Snow Valley, Blue Mountain/Collingwood (Ontario’s largest ski resort) and Mount St.Louis Moonstone. Not far away from Barrie is Georgian Bay, one of Ontario’s favourite getaway areas. The prominent Sprit Catcher sculpture on Barrie’s lakefront, which was designed by sculptor Ron Baird and donated to Barrie Gallery Project in 1987, represents the Aboriginal People of Canada and the Aboriginal myth of Thunderbird. Barrie’s downtown area along Dunlop Street showcases many buildings which date back to the Victorian times, and have been preserved to highlight the architectural heritage.
