The ideal location during Black History Month to have an award reception honoring unsung heroes within the California community was on Thursday, February 23, 2006 from 6PM to 8PM at the City Club on Bunker Hill in Los Angeles, CA. Over a hundred guests from all over California enjoyed first-class hors d’oeuvres, the piano stylings of William Bryant and socializing with five outstanding California individuals selected for their exceptional work in the community at large.
TPC Foundation, Inc. along with presenting sponsors Wells Fargo and Microsoft, and corporate sponsors Farmers Insurance - Farmers Action for Communities of Tomorrow (F.A.C.T.) and Turning Point Magazine presented the 13th Annual Living History Makers Awards Reception. The program, presided over by Pat Means, President of the Board of Directors of TPC Foundation Inc. welcomed sponsors, finalists, Honorees and guests.
One of the highlights of the reception was the acknowledgements of Commendations and Letters of support from National, State and Local elected officials for the Honorees of the evening including one from the President of the United States, George W. Bush.
Jerry Ruiz, Senior Vice President, Wells Fargo Community Development represented Wells Fargo, the 13th Annual Living History Makers corporate sponsor. Celeste M. Alleyne represented first time TPC Foundation, Inc. sponsor Microsoft. Ms. Means also thanked longtime TPC Foundation, Inc. sponsor Farmers Insurance - Farmers Action for Communities of Tomorrow (F.A.C.T.) and it’s President Faye W. McClure for their continuing support.
Several finalists were in attendance and were acknowledged with Certificates such as Arts and Entertainment Finalist Mother Love, Education Finalist Jason Seward; Advocate finalist G. Patricia Jackson and Science and Technology Finalist Jennifer Spaulding. The remaining finalists in each category announced were: Education: Dr. Thomas Parham and Edna Herring; Entertainment and Arts: Earl Ofari Hutchinson and Advocate: Sam Washington.
The 2006 honorees are: ADVOCACY, William Tribble Sr., ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT, Malcolm Ali; EDUCATION, Howard Ransom Jr.; SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY: The award was picked up by Dr. James Kennedy for Hildreth “Hal” Walker Jr. and EMERGING LIVING HISTORY MAKER: Myia Jones, the 14-year-old CEO of Multicultural Youth in Action Inc. (MYIA Inc.)
Next year’s 14th Annual Living History Makers Award Reception will be held Thursday, February 22, 2007. Applications for Californians to become a nominee will be made available by fall 2006.
