The "Golden Ring" is the name of a tourist route popular with both Russian and foreign lovers of old Russian architecture. The route winding in and out of cities and villages in the north-eastern part of what used to be the State of Muskovy is hardly circular, but it is certainly "golden" in the sense that it is rich in historical monuments and towns that are museums in themselves. These man-made "stone records" of the past have witnessed historical events, the suffering and heroism of the people. In the sixteenth sections of this album you will find brief descriptions of what took place. You will read about outstanding places of interest along the route and about the remarkable examples of old Russian architecture still in existence.
Fifty years ago many splendid specimens of medieval architecture were in danger of complete disintegration. It is due to the unstinting efforts of Russian experts that the buildings have been restored to their former beauty and elegance.
The scope of restoration work broadened considerably after the victorious end of World War II. In 1966 the'government of the Russian Federation set up the USSR Association for the Reservation of Historical and Cultural Monuments, and it is this cultural body which conceived the idea of the Golden Ring as a special sightseeing tour. The "Ring" is continuously expanding with the inclusion of additional places of interest as more and more monuments are restored and placed under the protection of the state.
