Delphian School student places second at High School Chess State Championships.

The Chess for Success State Championship Tournament concluded last Saturday afternoon at the Portland Convention Center. Among the top finishers in the high school division was Christopher Kevorkian, a 16-year-old junior attending The Delphian School in Sheridan. Christopher tied for second in a field of twenty-two of Oregon’s top high school chess players.
Two other local students placed highly in the competition, including Max Conley of Chehalem, who tied for third in the sixth-grade division, and the Delphian School’s Gabi Ruiz, who managed fourth place amongst the seventh graders.
The Chess for Success championship tournament is the largest chess competition in Oregon, with roots that go back 39 years to when it was a smaller event sponsored by OMSI (Oregon Museum of Science and Industry). This year over 500 kindergarten through twelfth grade students, representing all regions of the state, were involved in the team and individual competitions.
The Delphian School is an independent, co-educational day and boarding school offering college preparatory, English-as-a-Second-Language and summer programs for elementary through high school students. The Delphian School is licensed to use Applied Scholastics(TM) educational services (http://www.AppliedScholastics.Org).
