March 15, 2006 (Press Release) --
Lilburn, Georgia – March 15, 2006 – The Atlanta Salsa Meetup Group is among the Top Ten largest Salsa Meetup groups worldwide, only falling behind larger cities such as NY, DC, San Diego, and Chicago.
Felicia A. Waits, organizer of The Atlanta Salsa Meetup Group, said, “Atlanta is a wonderful place for all types of dancing and meeting new and interesting people. What could be more fun than combining the two?”
The Atlanta Salsa Meetup Group was organized in February 2006 and has quickly grown to over 30 members. Waits expects the group to grow upwards of 100 members by year end. Waits commented, “Atlanta is a fairly large and active city. People are often members of multiple groups and organizations. Hopefully some of them will be interested in joining ours.”
Waits, a special event advisor, explains her goal in volunteering to organize the Salsa group was “to bring a group of people together who enjoy this type of dancing and who might not otherwise have the opportunity because they don’t have a partner or know where to go.” Waits described the group environment as beneficial to the casual dancer. Group members have the opportunity to learn different styles and moves as well as have access to a variety of partners to help increase skill level.”
Waits also points out that The Atlanta Salsa Meetup Group is particularly great for less outgoing or shy individuals. She explains, “They can go out dancing and enjoy themselves because there will be people right there whom they know and they can dance with. It is much less intimidating than having to approach strangers and request a dance. Eventually, confidence grows and asking someone outside the group won’t be so scary.”
When asked about the Atlanta Salsa Meetup Group members, Waits extended an invitation to, “everyone, even people who have never Salsa-ed in their life. You don’t have to be an excellent dancer to enjoy yourself. And if I can do it with a bad knee and a trick ankle, just about anyone can.” The skill level of group members varies. Group member responses to a poll showed that most learn to dance from a friend or relatives and never took formal lessons.
The Atlanta Salsa Meetup Group is open to anyone 18 years or older, including those who have never had lessons or are not familiar with the dances. Most of the members are from the Atlanta metro area, but members from Meetup groups in other cities are welcomed into the group when visiting the Atlanta area. Events are often organized to include venues where lessons are incorporated in the cover charge so that members are able to learn the dance, learn new styles, or brush up on moves.
