March 17, 2006 (Press Release) --
Sha Crawford, 26 has set up a website called “Sponsor a Manic Depressive” in the style of an adopt an animal campaign, advertising for people to donate her money because bipolar disorder prevents her from holding down a full-time job. She states “[incapacity benefits] do not begin to compete with an average Oxbridge graduate salary.”
Crawford, who was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder five years ago, stresses that the site is meant in a tongue-in-cheek manner and she is more interested in promoting awareness about the difficulties that people with mental illnesses face than earning money.
“I don’t expect anybody to donate but if someone offers I suppose I’ll give them the details of a registered charity like ‘MDF – The Bipolar Organisation’ who would use the money wisely.” Crawford explains.
Sha offers sponsors incentives such as annual birthday cards and colouring-in sheets. Despite joking that a handsome professional would be an ideal sponsor she stresses in her disclaimer that sponsorship does not imply any form of romance between herself and a patron.
