March 20, 2006 (Press Release) --
UK (top-mortgage- loans) February 20, 2006: Mortgage lending started well this year with loan advances touching the highest figures on record for January. About £23.03 billion was lent this month, a third higher than the advances in January 2005. But despite these strong figures on year to year basis, loan advances were still 14% below in comparison to December, 2005.
According to Council of Mortgage Lenders lending typically weakens around the start of the year because house-buying slows down during the winter. However, it added that last months figure was still good, projecting consumers' faith in the property market, and expectations that rate of interest would remain consistent.
British Bankers Association has also confirmed the trend of mortgage loans for the month of January. It says that the loan advances has decreased in comparison to December but is slightly below the average of last six months.
