March 22, 2006 (Press Release) --
Political opponents of Bangladesh’s Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia, the most dynamic, courageous and committed female leader in the world should be now feeling envy, after they have witnessed the remarkable success during her just concluded India tour. The most important reason behind the extremely successful tour of Begum Zia, was her very first comment, where she categorically mentioned that her government was extending hands of cooperation with Indian with an open mind. This possibly touched the hearts of Indian President APJ Abdul Kalam and Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh. Both of them, for the first time in the diplomatic history of the nations, openly declared that, India will not take or initiate any policy or plan, which would go against the interest of Bangladesh. No doubt, such a sincere and bold statement by the Indian leadership leaves significant signal to today’s struggling world that the largest democracy in the world is now contemplating in improving relations with its small neighbors. Every one knows for sure that India is geographically several folds bigger than Bangladesh as well it is a nuclear power. On the other hand, Bangladesh is a moderate Muslim country, trying desperately to improve socio-economic conditions of it. For obvious reasons, Bangladesh does not have any nuclear ambition. Only recently, due to extreme shortage of power, it was reported in local press in Bangladesh that the country should build nuclear reactor to produce electricity to meet the growing demand. Possibly, in near future the reactor project will turn into reality. Already China is ready to provide Bangladesh with such reactor with the goal of helping the country is overcoming the existing power crisis. On the other hand, United States is also positively considering the issue.
After the visit of Begum Zia to India, possibly a new vista of cooperation, trust and mutual understanding will begin between Dhaka and New Delhi. If such situation will become true, possibly the issue of nuclear reactor for generation of energy in Bangladesh will be implemented in near future. On the other hand, India should also stop giving support and shelter to a number of notorious criminals and terrorists who fled Bangladesh and took refuge or shelter in different parts of India. This is some thing, which should again come on reciprocal basis. Let’s hope that, what Indian President and Prime Minister said were all true and came from their hearts. Dr. Singh especially enjoys high esteem for his sincerity and commitment value. Should he now show the same attitude and spirit to Bangladesh? Many feel that Dr. Singh will keep his words. Then this is great news for Indo-Bangla relations. Now, the international community should come forward to extend all our support in various ways to Bangladesh in letting her earn the status of self-reliant country. Many of the experts in the world opine that, once the present alliance government in Bangladesh comes in power either under BNP’s lead or if BNP would be able to get the single majority, certainly a brilliant tomorrow is awaiting for the people of Bangladesh.
