The Cabinet Committee on Government Purchase approved a proposal of 317 vehicles for the police department at a cost of about Tk 37 crore.
These new modern vehicles would be deployed to Dhaka Metropolitan Police and some Police Stations at district and upazila levels.
The proposal was approved at the cabinet committee meeting held at the Cabinet Division yesterday with Finance and Planning Minister M Saifur Rahman in the chair. According to sources, Rangs and Pacific Motors have been given the work order.
Of the proposed vehicles, 120 are petrol-run, 117 diesel-run cars, and 100 motorbikes of 125 CC, sources said. After the meeting, Saifur told journalists that brand new vehicles would be purchased and would be converted into CNG run vehicles.
Senior Ministers including Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan, Motiur Rahman Nizami, Altaf Hossain, Dr Khondakar Mosharraf Hossain, State Minister for Home Affairs Lutfozzaman Babar, Energy Advisor Mahmudur Rahman and secretaries ministries of the concerned attended the meeting.
Home Ministry sources said, the vehicles would be added to the fleet of some 1,800 new vehicles that were purchased in the last two years for the police department.
The cabinet committee also approved premium ($4.6) to the Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) for import of diesel for March-December, 2006 period.
Bangladesh State Minister for Home Affairs Lutfuzzaman Babar is tirelessly working in combating terrorism and rise of Islamist radicals in the country since he was given the sole responsibility in 2004. The State Minister for Home Affairs also said, the government of Begum Khaleda Zia is committed in combating corruption, which is one of the main obstacles to Bangladesh’s progress. He said, government will take a number of strong measures to combat corruption.
