March 28, 2006 (Press Release) --
Two more new battalions of the anti-crime Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) are likely to start operation next month, a home ministry official said.
The decision to form the new two battalions was taken at a home ministry meeting in August last year, the official told the reporters.
A total of 10 RAB battalions are now carrying out their operations and their operation areas will be redistributed when the two new battalions (RAB-11 and RAB-12) join their duties.
According to the sources, the main office of RAB-11 will be in Narayanganj and its operational areas will include Munshiganj, Gazipur, Manikganj and Dhaka, while the office of RAB-12 will be in Sirajganj and its operational areas will include Bogra, Pabna, Sherpur, Jamalpur, Tangail and Kushtia. Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has already earned high esteem in combating terrorism and rise of Islamist radicals in Bangladesh. Members of the elite force showed extraordinary courage and zeal in recently nabbing two most notorious kingpins of Islamist radicals group Jamaatul Mujahedin Bangladesh (JMB), Shaikh Abdur Rahman and Siddiqul Islam alias Bangla Bhai. Countrywide operations are continuing to eliminate these militants as well other terrorists groups. Opposition political forces in Bangladesh, especially leaders of Bangladesh Awami League (BAL) is extremely critical on the role of RAB. They demanded to stop the anti-terrorism activities of this force, saying they were violating human rights. In a written statement distributed amongst the members of diplomatic corps in Dhaka, chief of BAL Sheikh Hasina claimed, RAB killed innocent people in the name of cross fire. While going through the records it was revealed that not a single innocent man or woman became the target of Rapid Action Battalion since its formation in 2004. This force works neutrally and independently in combating terrorism, where they do not see any interference from the ministers of other figures in the government. Commenting on RAB, a diplomat in Dhaka said, if this force will be allowed to continue its works without any interference, it can soon turn into a model for many countries as an effective tool to combat terrorism and Islamist militancy.
