Prime Minister Khaleda Zia blasted an opposition political party's destructive action and attack on police in the name of Secretariat gherao in their covert bid to create unrest in the country.
"The opposition is only out to unleash unrest in the country with destructive action. They don't want development and peace of the country. They create obstacles at every step so that people cannot stay sound," she told a big public meeting at Shaheed Ali Ahmad Memorial High School at Sagoria, a southern district in the country.
In the capital, the Bangladesh Awami League (BAL)-led opposition coalition tried to stage a squatting demonstration outside the government's administrative headquarters today and clashed with the police.
Criticising the opposition's various "anti-people" and "anti-development" acts, the PM said the party has been speaking about and trying for resignation of the coalition government since the assumption of office by the BNP and the alliance.
"But the people did not respond to their call for toppling the democratically elected government," she told her audience amid applause.
Prime Minister Khaleda said when her government has been carrying out development activities in all sectors, investment-friendly atmosphere is prevailing and foreign investment coming in a bigger way as well as when the country is advancing toward prosperity, the opposition has resorted to vandalism, arson and damaging public property to halt the progress.
She said the party did not do any development and welfare activities while in power but when they are out of power they obstruct development process carried out by her government.
Listing her government's successes and development activities all over the country appreciated at home and abroad, Khaleda, the chairperson of BNP, said if BNP and alliance was returned to power in 2007 general election, a great change would be brought in Bangladesh's looks during 2007-2012 period.
She said they (BAL) don't want people's welfare but their own welfare through exploiting people which has been manifest during their rule when they plundered public wealth, resorted to terrorism and corruption and presented famines that caused lakhs of people to perish for want of food.
