http://www.savvymedias.com/store/contactus.asp For those not yet personally touched by a child with autism, there will be significant, often indirect, financial ramifications if this trend continues. Autism is only one of five categories of Pervasive Developmental Disorder, a condition often qualifying for Social Security or Disability Income. As the stream of applications and filings trickles into the Social Security Administration from the financial strained parents of PDD-diagnosed children, so will the baby boomers begin their retirements, ending in mayhem.
In a grass roots efforts, Summer McFarland has set to forth with unbridled ambition to conquer what she believes is a treatable but misrepresented diagnosis. "I searched four years and spent thousands upon thousands of dollars just for a diagnosis," says McFarland, "and it doesn't end there. We have over $700.00 per month in copays and therapy costs alone." And the money really isn't the issue.
"Having an autistic child who is now very high functioning," says McFarland, "I silently scream every time I hear that autism can't be cured, nothing can help, every time I go to a website that has wonderful words like "cure" and "treat" but find lists of therapies and, my favorite, ways to "cope". We don't need to cope when we can CURE." McFarland tries speaking to parents about treatments that have helped her daughter and others, but believes, as do others, that the media has done a biased reporting of the treatments and cures available, at best.
So with the diamond-hard determination of a mother, McFarland has spread the word about her search for cures for autism and the need for stories from families. She has several hundred contacts, but wants many more, to highlight the great stories of children who have begun to speak, who are now functioning the way God intended, and the avenues taken to get there, the miracles. "This MUST change for our children, for their children, for the future of us all." McFarland asks, "If you have a story about treatments, cures, improvements and hope, please send us your story, your contact information, anything you are willing to share. The small things, the time you spend, could change millions of lives."
