April 1, 2006 (Press Release) --
Eminent journalist, columnist, author, political analyst and editor of Weekly Blitz in Bangladesh, Salah Uddin Shoaib Choudhury will receive this year's Moral Courage Award during the centennial celebration of American Jewish Committee (AJC) in Washington DC.
Shoaib is the first Muslim editor to receive such a prestigious award and is the third recipient of Moral Courage Award in past 100 years history of the organization.
AJC decided to give this award to Choudhury in recognition of his tireless work and dedication to establishment of Global Peace and for advocating relations between Muslim world and Israel.
Salah Uddin Shoaib Choudhury was arrested on 29th November 2003 from Zia International Airport in Dhaka, Bangladesh, when he was about to board on an aircraft to attend a symposium in Tel Aviv, organized by hebrew Writers Association. For his critical writings against Islamist radicals, Shoaib faces sedition charges. Trial of this false case will begin this month. Meanwhile, three of the US Congressmen, Joseph Crowley, Mark Steven Kirk and Peter King have written to Bangladesh authorities asking from immediately dropping the false case. In a letter to Bangladesh authorities, the congressmen said, "if the trial proceeds, we assure you, it will come under intense international scrutiny".
In 2005 Salah Uddin Shoaib Choudhury received PEN USA's Freedon to Write Award.
