FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) April 4, 2006 --

Located a little to the West of the increasingly congested city centre, Churchill is set in the largest grounds of any College. Its layout, with playing fields next to residential courts and lawns, is modern and spacious. The Centre for Mathematical Sciences, the Gates Computing Sciences Centre and the Nanoscience Centre are close by. Electrical Engineering will also be relocating to this area shortly. Winston Churchill, in whose honour the College was founded in 1959, expressly intended that graduates should form a sizeable proportion of the College population. Over half the graduate students are from outside the UK, giving the College a truly international flavour. Churchill is a scientific College, with a lively arts presence.

Accommodation
Most of the College accommodation for graduate students is in, or immediately next to, the College grounds, and includes three new purpose-built houses. It is normally possible to offer accommodation to all single postgraduate students from outside Cambridge for two years (sometimes even three). There is also accommodation for married students (see boxed text) though availability is less predictable. All rooms on site have internet access.

Other facilities

Churchill has a fine library, which is open 24 hours a day, admirable sporting facilities (and in Churchill they are - with the exception of the river - on the spot), and a thriving music society. We also have a friendly and informal ambience (though we do have some formal occasions). Unlike any other College, we also have the Churchill Archives Centre, which houses the entire collection of Winston Churchill's papers, those of many of his famous contemporaries, and a number of other collections of important scientific and political figures of the twentieth century (e.g. Rosalind Franklin, Frank Whittle, Margaret Thatcher, Neil Kinnock).

The graduate students' society - the MCR - has its own Common Room, is fully represented on College committees, and organises regular social functions and outings, to which spouses and partners are most welcome. All first-year postgraduates are allocated a friendly Fellow (called a mentor) to link them with the Fellowship, as well as the traditional Tutor.

Funding and fellowships

For the availability of postgraduate research studentships (at least one a year) see the College website. The College also offers stipendiary and non-stipendiary postdoctoral Fellowships.

The College contributes up to 300 annually towards the costs incurred by research students for fieldwork or giving conference papers, provided they are also supported by their Department (not normally the case for one-year degrees). Hardship funds are available, normally for three-year students who run into unforeseen difficulties.
