April 4, 2006 (Press Release) --
Downing is a medium-sized, friendly, informal and academically successful college. Its 16-acre grounds, fine gardens and splendid neo-classical buildings offer a uniquely spacious haven in the centre of Cambridge. Although the College admits a significant number of students for one-year courses, those intending to read for the PhD degree are especially encouraged.
Accommodation
The College has accommodation on site and a number of nearby hostels, which include purpose-built accommodation for graduate students. Preference is given to first-year graduates in the allocation of accommodation, but a number of second- and third-year graduates are also housed. Graduates in their first or second year of study may apply for hostel-keeper positions in the undergraduate hostels in the following year. The College has some limited accommodation for couples and none suitable for families.
Other facilities
Graduates have a separate MCR and hold frequent graduate dinners during Term, together with many other social events throughout the year, including vacation periods. They also participate in the College clubs and societies and enjoy the full range of College facilities, including the library, computer room, sports facilities, gym and College bar. The President and Secretary of the MCR attend College Committee and Governing Body meetings to represent the views of graduates. There is an active MCR committee elected each year which provides the impetus for a lively graduate community.
Funding and fellowships
There is a Graduate Students Support Fund which is used to provide assistance towards travel and conference expenses and for those students facing financial hardship. The College normally offers a Research Fellowship each year for open competition. A number of scholarships for graduate students are available.
