MELODY GARDOT AND JOHN FRANCIS PLAY CONCERT FOR THE PEOPLE OF TIBET!
“Help Us Help Tibet Benefit Concert”
Thursday April 20th, 7:30 PM
La Salle University Ballroom
1900 West Olney Avenue, Philadelphia PA
Tickets $10.00
Keynote Speaker: “Lhundup” former political prisoner/survivor tells his story about his quest for freedom as a Buddhist monk in Tibet
This show will benefit two major Tibet support organizations: Students for a Free Tibet (SFT) and the Guchusum Movement. Guchusum, a non-profit organization based in Dharamasala, India provides badly needed medical care to tortured political prisoners that have recently escaped from Tibet. Both SFT and Guchusum are non-profit and rely solely on donations in order to operate.
ABOUT THE ARTISTS:
John Francis has an impressive resume with appearances at both the Apple Farm Arts Festival and the Philadelphia Folk Festival. His support for the Tibetan cause can be attributed to the fact that he spent several months in a monastery while traveling in Tibet.
Melody Gardot has also been gathering attention since her release of her "Some Lessons EP" in 2005. Some of her musical highlights include her performance at the WXPN All About the Music Festival, as well as sharing the stage with Susan Tedeschi, Mike Doughty and Brandi Carlile earlier this year. Gardot supports the Tibetan cause by donating a portion of her CD sales to the Guchusum movement through her website.
ABOUT THE SPEAKERS
Tenzin Tsultrim, President of the Tibetan Association will present and translate for keynote speaker, Lhundup a former Buddhist monk and political prisoner now residing in Woodstock N.Y. Born in 1949, he took part in a peaceful protest in 1988 which lead to his imprisonment and torture and eventual exile. Since 1949, 1.2 million Tibetans have died as a direct result of China's brutal occupation.
ADDED FEATURES
A raffle will be held to raise additional funds including a (13X19) gallery-quality Cibachrome photographic print by Tibetan photographer Sonam Zoksang valued at $175 and a black and white photo print by photographer Douglas Herman.
