Bangladesh ranks 20th in the Singapore travel market with number of travelers to the city state growing by 30 per cent in 2005 over the past year. About 54,000 Bangladeshis traveled to Singapore last year.
‘Singapore Tourism Board expects more travelers from Bangladesh this year,’ said Kang Siew Kheng, regional director of the country’s national tourism agency, said in Dhaka, while briefing the media people on the Southeast Asian nation’s booming tourism market.
The board is taking part in the three-day Dhaka Travel Mart that began at the Sheraton Hotel.
Kheng said that World Travel and Tourism Council has predicted that outbound travel from Bangladesh over the next 10 years would see an annual growth of 6.5 per cent, which is more than double the global rate.
‘Although most of the travelers from Bangladesh are for medical purpose, we hope traveling for leisure and entertainment will increase in near future,’ she said, adding that their efforts would continue to attract more tourists from Bangladesh.
The board’s area director, Kenneth Lim, elaborated steps and plans taken by the agency to boost tourism business targeting to triple tourism receipts, double visitor arrivals and create 100,000 new jobs in the services sector by 2015.
