When severe weather strikes, it's important to have a safety plan.
You should designate the safest area in the house -- a basement, or an interior room without windows -- as your safety center, the U.S. National Weather Service says. Have it stocked with a flashlight and battery-operated radio.
In a thunderstorm, you should avoid using electronics, talking on the phone, or taking a bath or shower. If you are caught outdoors, head for the nearest secure building, or a car if that is the closest shelter. Stay away from isolated trees, bodies of water, and fences. If you are boating or swimming, get out of the water immediately and head for shelter.
During a tornado, head for the basement or an interior hallway and cover yourself for protection from debris. You should never seek shelter in a car or mobile home, where most deaths from tornadoes occur.
